Vienna in Advent is magical—but with more than a dozen Christmas markets spread across the city, knowing which ones to visit can make the difference between a lovely evening and a rushed checklist. If you are planning a winter trip, this local guide to the best Vienna Christmas markets in 2026 will help you choose the right markets, understand the dates, and experience them at their best.

When do Vienna Christmas markets open in 2026?
The first major markets open surprisingly early this year. The Christmas markets at Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz begin on November 6, 2026. Rathausplatz, Karlsplatz, Am Hof and Spittelberg follow on November 13, while Freyung opens on November 14. Several markets continue beyond Christmas, with Schönbrunn remaining open through January 6, 2027.
Dates and opening hours can change, so it is always worth checking the official Vienna Tourist Board Christmas-market overview shortly before your visit.
1. Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market
Dates: November 6, 2026–January 6, 2027
If you want the grand imperial version of Christmas in Vienna, start here. The illuminated façade of Schönbrunn Palace makes an extraordinary backdrop, and the market combines more than 90 decorated huts with handicrafts, regional food and family activities. In 2026 there are also curling lanes, a carousel, Ferris wheel, children’s train and craft workshop.
Local tip: Pair the market with a palace visit in the afternoon, then stay as daylight fades and the lights come on. The atmosphere changes completely after dark.
2. Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz
Dates: November 13–December 26, 2026
Rathausplatz is the big, classic Vienna Christmas market: festive lights, decorated stalls, sweets, hot punch and the neo-Gothic City Hall towering behind it all. It is also home to the Vienna Ice World, with roughly 3,000 square meters of ice winding through the illuminated Rathauspark.
Best for: First-time visitors, families and anyone who wants the iconic Christmas-card version of Vienna.
Local tip: It gets busy. Visit on a weekday in the late afternoon if you can, then walk through the nearby Volksgarten and continue toward the historic center.
3. Art Advent at Karlsplatz
Dates: November 13–December 23, 2026
Karlsplatz is one of my favorites for visitors who care about craftsmanship and food. Art Advent focuses on creative arts and crafts, live performances and family activities, and its gastronomy is fully certified organic. The magnificent Karlskirche gives the market one of the city’s prettiest settings.
Best for: Handmade gifts, families and travelers who prefer something creative and a little less conventional.
4. Old Viennese Christmas Market at Freyung
Dates: November 14–December 23, 2026
Freyung feels more intimate and traditional than Rathausplatz. Stalls sell crafts, candles, textiles, jewelry and seasonal specialties, while Advent music adds to the old-Vienna atmosphere. Its central location also makes it very easy to combine with Am Hof and the historic center.
If you enjoy discovering smaller corners of Vienna rather than only the headline sights, Freyung deserves a place on your list.
5. Christmas Village at Stephansplatz
Dates: November 6–December 26, 2026
Few Christmas-market locations are more dramatic than the square surrounding St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Stephansplatz is compact, extremely central and ideal if you have limited time. Expect local crafts, gifts and traditional seasonal food right in the heart of the old town.
Local tip: Do not make this your only market. Its biggest advantage is location, so use it as part of an evening walk through Vienna’s illuminated center.
6. Spittelberg Christmas Market
Dates: November 13–December 23, 2026
Spittelberg is completely different from the grand palace markets. Instead of a monumental square, stalls fill narrow Biedermeier streets and little lanes in Vienna’s 7th district. It feels cozy, urban and wonderfully atmospheric after dark.
Best for: Couples, repeat visitors and anyone who likes neighborhood atmosphere.
7. Am Hof Christmas Market
Dates: November 13–December 23, 2026
Am Hof is an excellent stop while exploring Vienna’s historic center and pairs naturally with nearby Freyung. It is particularly convenient if you want to sample two markets in one evening without spending your time crossing the city.
Which Vienna Christmas market is best?
There really is no single winner. For a first visit, choose Rathausplatz. For the most imperial setting, Schönbrunn. For arts and crafts, Karlsplatz. For a more traditional, intimate feel, Freyung. For romantic little streets, Spittelberg.
My favorite approach is not to race through five markets in one night. Pick two that complement each other, leave time for a proper meal, and actually enjoy the punch rather than treating Advent like a scavenger hunt.
What should you eat and drink?
Christmas markets are as much about eating as shopping. Look for roasted chestnuts, sausages, potato dishes, gingerbread and other seasonal sweets. For drinks, Punsch is the classic market choice, while Glühwein is hot mulled wine. Many stands charge a refundable deposit for the mug, so do not be surprised when your first drink costs more than expected.
Practical tips for Vienna Christmas markets
- Go on weekdays when possible. Friday and Saturday evenings can be extremely crowded.
- Dress for standing outside. Vienna in November and December can feel much colder when you are lingering with a drink rather than walking.
- Carry a little cash. Card acceptance has improved, but it is still useful at smaller stands.
- Do not over-plan. Two markets in an evening is usually plenty.
- Check Christmas Eve hours. Many markets close early on December 24, and some finish for the season before Christmas Day.
