Dürnstein Castle, Wachau Valley

Dürnstein is a charming town nestled in the Wachau Valley of Austria, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and historical significance. It’s most famous for its role in the legend of King Richard the Lionheart of England. In 1192, Richard was captured by Leopold V, Duke of Austria, while returning from the Crusades, and imprisoned in the Dürnstein Castle. The town’s fortress, perched high on a hill, is said to have been the site of his confinement. According to legend, Richard’s captivity was only ended when his loyal minstrel, Blondel, sang outside the castle’s walls, leading Richard to reveal his location. The story of his imprisonment and eventual release has become an enduring piece of local lore. Whether you’re on a Danube river cruise, or coming in from Vienna for the day via bike or train, definitely head to Dürnstein to explore its charming cobblestoned alleys, and try some of their apricot products!
